My colors are apple red, aqua blue, with ivory and black accent. I'm loving it, I think it looks amazing. However, when paired with too much white, it looks patriotic. With too much black, it looks bleak. Is this a good color scheme, and, if so, how can I make it work without the impending "flag" tribute?

I think you should be good with any of the themes, because you are using aqua blue and not navy blue.  I would tend to do more of the aqua and red together and really leave the accent colors, just that...accenting your main theme.  Maybe have the black be in the text of your menu cards, and table numbers, and escort cards/seating chart.  The ivory could be your napkin color.

Hope that helps.
